Charles "Charlie" Bickford
March 24, 1937 — March 10, 2024
Charles Franklin Bickford, 86, passed away March 10, 2024 at his home.
Charles was born March 24, 1937 to Hildreth and Audrey (Woodard) Bickford in Bangor, Maine. He was a graduate of South High School in Denver, CO where he was selected for all state in track and football. He retired from Hillshire Farms where he obtained the level of vice president of sales.
Charlie enjoyed camping, rides in the country, watching his grandchildren play sports, and watching his family grow and succeed. He loved all sports, especially the Hawkeyes. His true passion was coaching and mentoring kids, which he did at St. Augustine’s with their basketball team and St. Theresa’s with their softball and basketball teams, along with many other recreational teams. He dedicated many years to volunteering, even accomplishing Volunteer of the Year Award from the South Des Moines Chamber of Commerce.
Charles was a kind man who never met a stranger. He will be remembered by many as dad, friend, coach, mentor, but most importantly, as “grandpa”.
Left to mourn his loss are his children, Elizabeth Hubbard, Peggy Bickford, Mary Ellen Bickford and Bridgett (Scott) Brower; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, with one addition to arrive in June.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mary Bickford, and his daughter, Audrey Bickford.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2024 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines.
Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association in loving memory of Charlie's beloved wife, Mary.

To the whole family...I am so very sorry to learn of Chuck's passing. He and your mom took my sis, Kelley and me under their wings. Whether we were there playing or eating a "super supper" as he one time called it or even camping at Jester Park, we had so much fun and remember him and your dear mother so fondly. I know this is a bit after the fact but grief comes in waves. I'm here for all of you and my thoughts and prayers are with you. God bless. Rest in peace Chuck and Mary.

Heaven got a good one today. I have had many coaches throughout my childhood but, the one I remember most is Coach B. He was so passionate to not just make you a better player but also a better person. Thank you coach for all your contributions of your time and talent! You will be missed and I will always cherish the memories.
