Catherine Ann Dirks

Catherine Ann Dirks was born Feb 20, 1939 to Kenneth and Leona Berg. She passed away Feb 29, 2024 after a long battle with dementia.

She was born and raised in Sioux City, Iowa, and graduated from Central High School.

She married Maynard Dirks Aug 19, 1956 in Sioux City. They resided in Sioux City until 1981, when they moved to the Des Moines area.

Cathy began working at Younkers in 1975 as the telephone operator. She quickly worked her way up the ranks from operator to Assistant Cosmetics Buyer to Cosmetics Buyer to Store Manager and finally, to General Manager. After her long and distinguished career with the department store, she retired in 2002.

She was an avid gardener, a voracious reader, loved playing cards, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Leona; brother, Roger; her husband, Maynard; children, Marvin, Theresa, Pamela, and Steven; granddaughter, Christina; and great-granddaughter, Autumn.

She is survived by son, Jim (Faith) Dirks of Redding, California; daughter, Angela (Phil) Roe of Des Moines, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; dozens of nieces and nephews; as well as numerous other family members, friends, and loved ones.

Services will be held at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th St. in Des Moines on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Family will greet friends following the service.
