Carol Lavon Lyons

Carol Lavon Lyons, 90, passed away April 9, 2026 at Westhaven Community in Boone, Iowa.

Carol was born on June 17, 1935, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Lester and Irene (Morgan) Mapes. She graduated from Valley High School in 1952. On December 17, 1953, she married Earnest Smith, and together they were blessed with five children.

Throughout her life, Carol held a variety of jobs, including working at the Salvation Army’s home for unwed mothers and as a cook in several nursing homes. She later retired at the age of 62 from Des Moines Blueprint.

Carol had a deep love for camping and traveling, and she especially enjoyed country music, word puzzles, and assembling large jigsaw puzzles. In 1987, she married Jerry Lyons, and they remained together until his passing in 2002. She spent nearly 20 years living in Mission, Texas, before returning to Boone, Iowa, to be closer to her family.

Carol cherished time spent with her family and friends and will be remembered for the joy she found in their company.

She is survived by her children, Kevin (Janey) Smith, Dan (Diane) Smith, Eric (Christina) Smith, and Scott (Karen) Smith; sister, Terry Frank; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and son-in-law, John Garrett.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Violet Westphal; brother, Jerry Mapes; daughter, Myra Garrett; and husband, Jerry Lyons.
