Charles B. Funaro
June 23, 1935 — September 08, 2024
Charles Bernard Funaro, age 89, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at Genesis Senior Living in Des Moines.
Charles was born June 23, 1935, in Des Moines, Iowa. He grew up on the south-side and was never too far from Krispy Krust Bakery. As a youngster he enjoyed playing baseball as a catcher and even spent a year as bat boy for the Des Moines Demons. As a young man he was known locally as a great boxer and billiards player. He coached his sons Chuck and Nick in the South Des Moines Little League. He had tremendous patience with his grandsons, helping them learn to draw, play cards, and checkers. He always had Hershey’s Chocolate Bars waiting for them.
Charles was a man who was private and kept to himself but was known as a hard-worker. He was a man of routine who ate pasta every Sunday and had a Wendy’s hamburger for lunch every weekday.
He was a baker during his working years, owning and operating Krispy Krust Bakery and in later years employed by Rotella’s Italian Bakery.
He is survived by his sons: Chuck and Nick, five grandsons: Charles III, Joe, Tony, Alex, and Dylan, and eight great-grandchildren.
Charles was preceded in death by his daughters Tess and Joanne.
Cremation will occur and his urn will be buried at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

Chuck II and Nick,
I am so sorry for your loss. And I am so thankful your dad created Krispy Krust. My favorite bread ever!!! I loved the smell of the bakery and fondly remember sacking bread with Chuck II after a night on the town a few decades ago.
You’re in my thoughts and heart.
