Charles "Charlie" G. Cordaro
August 24, 1941 — February 18, 2025
Charles “Charlie” George Cordaro was born on August 24, 1941 to Samuel and Victoria “Vic” (Amadeo) Cordaro in Des Moines, Iowa. Charlie was baptized into the Catholic faith on October 19, 1941 at St. Anthony’s parish in Des Moines. He grew up in Des Moines and was a proud Italian Southsider, attending St. Anthony’s School and Dowling Catholic High School, graduating in 1959.
After graduation, Charlie started his career working for the City of Des Moines in the Planning and Zoning office, where he spent his entire career, retiring in 1998. In 1974, he married the love of his life, Bonnie Cuckie, on Valentine’s Day. Over the years, they enjoyed traveling together and having dinner with friends.
Charlie’s passion was playing golf, and most recently he enjoyed his weekly outings with The Golf Buddies. He also enjoyed cards and games with his friends, and he never knew a stranger. He was very proud of his Italian heritage and was a member of the Society of Italian Americans. In his earlier years, he enjoyed coaching girls softball and he co-owned Uncle Charlie’s Potato Chip stand with friends for a few years at the Iowa State Fair. In retirement, he worked part-time at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, where he made many more friends. He also enjoyed cheering on his nieces and nephews in all their endeavors.
Charlie passed away at home on February 18, 2025 with Bonnie by his side.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie, of Des Moines, his sisters-in-law Kathy (Harold) Hensch of Humboldt, Nancy (Marty) Gilson of Hardy, and Mary (Joe) Holmberg of Eagle Grove, and their families, and many cousins and friends.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, brother Sam, in-laws George and Myrtle Cuckie, and brother-in-law Robert Parsons.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the American Lung Association, First Tee of Central Iowa, or the Catholic Worker House.
Celebration of Life Service and Time of Sharing will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 28, 2025, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 Southwest 9th Street, Des Moines, Iowa. There will be a Visitation and Light Reception held immediately following the service.

Bonnie, I am sorry to hear about Charlie. I knew him from our time bowling and golfing together. I don’t think I ever saw him without a smile on his face, that was a warm welcome for anyone he was in contact with. His appearance on the south side will be missed.

I am sorry for your loss; I hope your grief will be partially alleviated as you recall the memories you have for Charlie. He was one of the friendliest individuals in City Hall, I knew him thru my own employment with the City of Des Moines.

Bonnie and Family:
I was saddened to read that your husband died recently. Chuck was such a friendly and loving person and I know you’ll miss him terribly.
I only got to know Chuck when he worked for Hamilton’s Funeral home and I remember talking to him about his mother Victoria. She volunteered at my home with a dozen other older parishioners, working on medical bandages to send overseas. Victoria was telling us what happened that day when crossing the street near her home. When a car approached, she tried to run but found out it was the first time that she could no longer run. We all laughed but knew that this would also happened to us one day!
Chuck had a wonderful family and a great life shared with you! I’m so sorry for your loss!

Lifting up prayers for Charlie and his dear family.
I grew up on Davis Ave. and went to St. Anthony's grade school.
His mom Vic and my mom, Marie Logan were good friends and were volunteers for many events at church and school.
He and I crossed paths throughout the years and I remember him being a caring kind-hearted guy.

I grew up on Davis Ave. with Charlie and enjoyed so much crossing paths with him in later years. I remember so kindly his mother and father; they were always nice to me. We all lived right across the street from MacRae Park which provided us kids a wonderful place to play and safely roam at that time. And as a kid I remember he would taunt me with snowballs and I recall his aim as being quite good. To the family I send my sympathy and prayers. Mary Jo Bates Gamble, Tucson AZ
