Charles N. Collins
May 10, 1939 — October 16, 2023
Charles Norman Collins, age 84, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 16, 2023.
Charles was born May 10, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois to Norman and Margaret Collins. He was employed for over 22 years with the Polk County Sheriff’s Department, retiring as a well-respected Sergeant of Detectives.
Charles was dedicated to his family and was a loving father and grandfather. He loved athletics, both playing as well as cheering on his favorite teams. Being born in Chicago, it was only fitting that he was an avid Cubs and Bears fan. Charles was an All-American football player at East High School in Des Moines, their first student athlete to letter in all major sports. Even after Charles was married with a family, he played basketball for the KIOA High Hoopers and was inducted into the Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame. He was a music lover as well, and especially loved Elvis. Above all else, he was a devoted family man, treasuring time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was their #1 supporter and would travel to cheer them on at all of their activities.
He is survived by his children, Tim Collins (Diana), Christin de la Rosa, and Michelle Collins; grandchildren, Kyle (Chelsea), Cody, Brooke, Niko, Hunter, and Brandon; great-granddaughter, Sloane; brother, Joe (Kathy) Collins; and other extended family and friends.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Margaret Collins; and his former wife, Vergie Collins.
There will be a celebration of life from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at Highland Park Christian Church, 4260 NW 6th Drive, Des Moines, IA 50313. Contributions may be directed to the Easterseals Iowa in loving memory of Charles.

I was so sorry to hear about Chuck's passing. I was fortunate to be able to work side by side with Chuck while I was an attorney in the Polk County Attorney's Office and Chuck was in the Sheriff's Department. He was always professional, responsible, respectful, careful, and thorough in all he did. Even though he often dealt with many tragic situations, he always managed to remain optimistic and keep a smile on his face. Watching how he did his job taught me how to be a better attorney. He will be missed....
