Barbara Jean Maxwell, age 93, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Every Step Hospice in Des Moines.

Barbara was born May 29, 1931, in Des Moines, Iowa to Oscar and Eva (Farnsworth) Anderson.

Barbara met Robert Maxwell at Amos Hiatt Jr. High School and through the years they fell in love and married July 20, 1948. They were married nearly 57 years until Robert’s passing in 2005.

Barbara was a homemaker and stay at home Mom, she also worked parttime at Dahl’s grocery store at the courtesy counter. Barbara loved to cook and feed everyone. Her roast beef dinners and apple pies were fabulous. If you ever visited her, you were sure to leave with food or one of her treasures from the basement or back porch. Barb loved a good bargain and enjoyed shopping at garage sales and thrift stores. She also enjoyed going to Prairie Meadows with friends and buying weekly lottery tickets. She cheered on both Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones during football and basketball season.

Most of all, Barbara loved her family very much and was very proud of each of them. We will miss her and feel blessed to have had her as our Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother.

Preceded in death by her parents and siblings Donald Anderson, Dorothy Foreman, Frannie Aldini, Gary Anderson Sr., and daughter Terri Jones.

She is survived by her children Carol Karnowski (Ron), Todd Maxwell (Erin); Grandchildren Ronnie Karnowski, Jeff Karnowski (Stacey), Jason Jones (Nikki), Aaron Jones (Linsey), Tanner Maxwell; Great Grandchildren Sayde and Jayse Jones, Gabbi and Bennett Jones, Kimbree and Anderson Karnowski; Sisters in Law Theresa Anderson, Donna Anderson, Judi Simpson; Son in Law Jack Jones; as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Laurel Hill Cemetery after the service.
