Arlene R. Herlein

Arlene Rose Herlein, 89, passed away following an extended illness on Wednesday, June 26, 2024. Visitation will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 30, 2024 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m.

Arlene was born on January 29, 1935 to John and Rose (Dvorsky) Sladek. She graduated as valedictorian from St. Mary’s High School and from there continued to Marycrest College and the University of Iowa. She was a lifelong educator for over 40 years for the Washington Community School District. Arlene was awarded the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers award. Arlene was a member of St. Boniface Church and Sacred Heart Church.

She is survived by her loving children, son, Michael (Deb) Herlein of Kentucky; daughters, Cristina (Sam) Falbo of Florida, Dori (Ron) Webb of Kansas City and Amy (Mike) Duder of West Des Moines, IA; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Jane Gish of IA; brother, John (Becky) Sladek of Texas; and brother-in-law, Jim (Judy) Herlein of Florida; and many other loving relatives and special friends.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard; her son, Troy; and siblings, Howard Sladek and Esther Jedlicka.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Food for the Poor and St. Jude’s Hospital in loving memory of Arlene.
