Alice Louise Meek

Alice Louise Meek, 91, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on Friday, April 3, 2026. She was born September 30, 1934 to Clyde and Lois (Orwan) Umsted in Dayton, Iowa. Alice grew up in Lorimor and graduated from Truro High School.

Alice worked as a tax examiner for the State of Iowa Revenue Department. She was a long-time member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Alice was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Heartland Order of the Eastern Star, and Mt. Oliver White Shrine. She also appreciated her time as a board member of Community Choice Credit Union.

Alice was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes Basketball fan and enjoyed gardening and baking. She was known for her amazing cookies. Alice will be remembered for her hard working and kind spirit. She had a generous spirit that touched many people.

Alice is survived by her son, Brett (Lori) Cole; grandchildren, Katharina (Dallas) Cashman, Christopher (Liz) Cole, and Daniel Cole; great-grandchildren, Brenna and Cora Cashman; sisters, Joan Starr and Jane McCarty; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Lois Umsted; husband, Jerry Meek; sister, Marilyn Miller; and brother, Donald Umsted.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines. Family will greet friends from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. prior to the service.

Interment at Iowa Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
