Theodore "Ted" Nelson

Theodore “Ted” Nelson, age 79, passed away Sunday, July, 3, 2011, at Trinity Center at Luther Park in Des Moines, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2011, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Family will meet friends one hour prior to the service.

Born January 14, 1932, Ted was the son of Edward and Juanita (Breese) Nelson. He grew up in Des Moines and attended East High School. After high school, Ted enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving from 1952 until 1960, where he was assigned to the NSA.

On August 4, 1952, Ted was united in marriage to Maxine Joy Smith, and to this union one son was born, Michael. The couple made their home in Des Moines, and Ted worked as a System Analyst with the Federal Home Loan Bank. Ted was a Past President of Central Iowa Model A Club, and helped form the Lake Association at Lake Ponderosa. He enjoyed wood working, home remodeling, restoration of classic cars, and painting. Most of all Ted loved spending time with Maxine and his family.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Maxine; son Michael (Bridget) Nelson; grandchildren, Tiffany Nelson and Michael Nelson Jr.; brother, Jack Nelson; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Ted was preceded in death by his parents.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the “Old Indian.”

Memorials may be directed to Iowa Hospice or Central Iowa Alzheimer’s Association.
