Donald R. Scott, 97, passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at his home.

Don was born in Leon, Iowa, on February 6, 1914, to Ray and Nora Scott of Leon. Don moved to Des Moines with family in the late 1920’s. He graduated from North High School, where he was an all-city center in football and Senior Class President.

During World War II, Don served in North Africa and Italy fighting at Anzio, Salerno, and Casino. He was awarded the Bronze Star for combat operations.

Don worked for Grocers Wholesale of Iowa until retirement. He then drove a van for the Convalescent House of Iowa (Child Serve). Don was also active in the Masonic Lodge, and was a Past Worthy Patron of the Northgate (Auburn) Chapter. Don was married to Audrey Scott for 62 years before her passing in 2008.

Don is survived by his son, Ronald R. Scott of Memphis, TN; grandchildren, Jayson R. Scott and Kelly C. Lomax of Memphis, TN; four great-grandchildren, Lydia M. Scott, Luke Thomas Scott, John Cooper Lomax and Molly R. Lomax all of Memphis, TN; as well as nephews, Steve and Mike Holmes of Prairie City, IA; and Chuck Slocum of Minneapolis, MN; and niece, Janet Schuller of Des Plaines, IL.

Funeral services will be 12 p.m., Saturday, July 2, 2011, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines, with burial at Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City, Iowa. The family will greet friends two hours prior to service time at the funeral home.
