Donald R. Scott, 97, passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at his home.
Don was born in Leon, Iowa, on February 6, 1914, to Ray and Nora Scott of Leon. Don moved to Des Moines with family in the late 1920’s. He graduated from North High School, where he was an all-city center in football and Senior Class President.
During World War II, Don served in North Africa and Italy fighting at Anzio, Salerno, and Casino. He was awarded the Bronze Star for combat operations.
Don worked for Grocers Wholesale of Iowa until retirement. He then drove a van for the Convalescent House of Iowa (Child Serve). Don was also active in the Masonic Lodge, and was a Past Worthy Patron of the Northgate (Auburn) Chapter. Don was married to Audrey Scott for 62 years before her passing in 2008.
Don is survived by his son, Ronald R. Scott of Memphis, TN; grandchildren, Jayson R. Scott and Kelly C. Lomax of Memphis, TN; four great-grandchildren, Lydia M. Scott, Luke Thomas Scott, John Cooper Lomax and Molly R. Lomax all of Memphis, TN; as well as nephews, Steve and Mike Holmes of Prairie City, IA; and Chuck Slocum of Minneapolis, MN; and niece, Janet Schuller of Des Plaines, IL.
Funeral services will be 12 p.m., Saturday, July 2, 2011, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines, with burial at Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City, Iowa. The family will greet friends two hours prior to service time at the funeral home.

Dear Family of Don Scott:
I am sorry that Don has passed away. I will miss him. I was not able to see his family to express my condolences, as I was transferring to another job in another location.
I have known Don for approximately the last 5 years. He lived in the neighborhood near where I worked. I have been serving as the Postal Clerk at Highland Park Station next to the Fareway Grocery Store, so I would see him about once a week.
I saw Ron a few months ago, when Don first got the pacemaker surgery. I sure do regret that I did not have more time to visit with Don regarding his personal history. I learned a few facts about his life previous to knowing me by getting a copy of the obituary. He did share about the van trips down South to visit you. I know he recently had been suffering with the back pain and later the heart problems. He is a man worth knowing up until his final day-very kind and not wanting any sympathy or help if he could do it himself. He had many friends around the neighborhood. All you who survive Don are his legacy and I know he was so proud of you all.

I consider it my privilege to have known Don as a fellow employee at the Convelescent Home for Children/ChildServe. He was a kind, gentle, honorable man who truly enjoyed being of service to others. Surely the Roman Orator, Cicero, had individuals such as Don in mind when he said, "The short time of life is long enough for living well and honorably." Don was a model for his family and for all of us. His eternal reward should be great indeed.

I have known Don since 1991 when I started working at Childserve or at that time was known as Convalescent Home for Children. He was the most caring man anyone could ever know. He loved his family and always talked about his wife Audrey and his family in Tennessee. After he retired and I was no longer at Childserve, I would see him occasionally at Fairway grocery store. He always gave me a hug. The last time I saw him a few months ago he planned on driving to Memphis. I thought he was going to fly but no, he had to drive. I always asked him how come he did not move to Memphis but he seemed to want to stay here. He was wonderful in every way and I will miss seeing him.

My husband Jerry & I worked with Don at ChildServe. I first met Don 19 years ago before I started working with him. He was waiting for a child to finish up with an appointment and I was early for an appointment. He was so easy to talk to - it was as if I had known him my whole life. He had such an independent spirit and would never take us up on our offers to help him shovel his sidewalk or help him around the house. My most fond memories about Don are he liked to jingle the change he had in his pocket, he liked to get where he was going fast and he loved his wife Audrey - VERY MUCH!!! I was proud to consider him a friend and looked forward to the times he would get his hair cut because he would always stop by and see all of us at ChildServe. I will miss him very much!!!

I was Don's manager at ChildServe when he work here. I enjoyed working with Don and visiting with him. Don really care about the kids and enjoyed driving them to where ever they needed to go. After he retired Don would stop in and visit for awhile. It was great to see him and to talk with him again. We will miss him a great deal. I am so sorry for your loss and hope you will take comfort in knowing he was a great man.
