LaVon Opal Holt Cooper, 83, passed away at her home June 27, 2011. Her body has been gifted to the University of Iowa College of Medicine. A celebration of life and visitation will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2011, at First Unitarian Universalist Church, 1800 Bell Avenue.

LaVon was a lifelong resident of Des Moines. She was born December 2, 1927, to Lynn and Elizabeth Holt.

LaVon graduated from North High in 1946. Late in her life, LaVon continued her education at DMACC and University of Iowa, receiving her Master’s in Social Work. LaVon retired from the Des Moines Public School System.

LaVon was a well known activist throughout her adult life. She belonged to Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom and First Unitarian Universalist Church of Des Moines, where she made many lifelong friends with similar convictions of the heart.

LaVon is survived by her sons, Robert “Bob” Cooper and his wife Deb and Stephen Cooper; grandsons, Aaron Cooper and Ben Cooper all of Des Moines; nephew, Keith Snyder of Urbandale; and her nieces, Charlotte Henry of Des Moines and Becky Latimer of Maryland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom or First Unitarian Universalist Church of Des Moines.
