Carl G. “Pete” Merschman, 77, passed away Saturday, April 14, 2007 at his home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am Wednesday at Ss. John and Paul Catholic Church in Altoona, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7pm Tuesday at the church with a vigil service at 7pm.
Carl was born December 17, 1929 in St. Paul, Iowa to Agnes and A.C. Merschman. He was an 8th grade graduate of St. James School in St Paul. Carl married Ina Denning on June 8, 1954 in Fort Madison. Despite his lack of formal education Carl learned through his work experience to become a sharp businessman. Carl and Ina moved to Altoona in 1974 and founded Homemaker’s Furniture which later became the largest furniture business in the state of Iowa. He was a member of Ss. John and Paul Catholic Church in Altoona and served the Catholic church in many ways. Despite a spinal cord injury in 1999 and being wheelchair bound he maintained a positive outlook on life. He enjoyed traveling, and was an avid Chicago cubs fan, but most of all enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and their activities.
Carl is survived by his loving wife, Ina, his five children, Dave (Anne), Alan (Erin), Terri, Connie and Roger (Kristy); his nine grandchildren, Jason, Brooke, Alexandria, Kelsey, Keaton, Abigail, Jacob, Clarissa and Joel; his siblings, Bernice Pomberg , LaVerne Cox , Helen Moller, JoAnn Herold, Jim and Marvin Merschman. Carl was preceded in death by his infant son, Joseph , his parents
