Robert “Bob” Dilley, 84, passed away on June 20, 2011. Private family services were held on Saturday at Capitol Hill Lutheran Church, followed by burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
Bob was born November 5, 1926, in Galesburg, Illinois, to Ernest and Jenny (Gustafson) Dilley. After graduation from Knox College he married Dorothy Benson on September 11, 1949. The couple moved to Des Moines in 1950, and founded Dilley Manufacturing Company. Bob’s passion was his work. He enjoyed a successful career in the graphic arts and communication field. As an entrepreneur, he developed new product lines working with a variety of businesses throughout the United States.
Bob was a 60-year member of Capitol Hill Lutheran Church. Over the years he served on the church council and participated in church organizations and activities. Bob was a generous individual lending his support to many community organizations. In 2010, the Iowa College Foundation recognized Bob for 25 years of service and support. While living in Des Moines, he served on the Printing Industries of the Midlands board and civic committees including the Des Moines Plan and Zoning Commission. He was honored to be a member of the study committee which developed and implemented the plans for the commercial establishment of the East Village in downtown Des Moines.
Bob enjoyed traveling with his children and grandchildren. His favorite family vacations were spent at Lake Okoboji and annual trips to Florida. Bob had a warm and nurturing personality and his grandchildren will fondly remember his advice, fun stories, and perfectly timed jokes.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah (Kevin) Flagg of West Des Moines and their children, Elyse (Ted) Brimeyer, Jennifer (David) Schuchmann, and Amy; daughter; Mary Hardenbrook of Des Moines and her daughter Holly (Cody) Nordstrom; son, David Dilley and his son, Devon of Fort Worth, Texas and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy. Memorial contributions may be made to Capitol Hill Lutheran Church.
