Thank you for visiting our father’s web page. Words can’t express how much we appreciate your prayers and kind wishes. If you were lucky enough to have known my Dad, we’d love hearing your stories. If you did not know Dale personally, you can see a little part of him in each of his children and grandchildren.

Dale and his beloved wife Donna are expecting their first great-grandchild in a few weeks. Their oldest granddaughter Amy and her husband Bobby live in Portland. Though she isn’t able to travel, they are here in spirit. The program photo we chose was taken at Amy and Bobby’s wedding and the rose over Dad’s heart is in honor of Amy Marie.

Dale died peacefully with Donna at his side - as she has been for nearly 60 years. He adored her and never missed an opportunity to give her a wink and a kiss. We often saw them holding hands and their affection was a shining example of their strong and loving union.

They married in 1952 after a short courtship. Dale had moved from the farm to the “big city” of Des Moines and was working at the Solar Aircraft plant. On breaks, the fellas would ogle the ladies who were working across the street at Meredith Publishing. Dad took notice of one “whistle-worthy” gal in particular, pointed her out, and declared she would be the girl he’d someday marry. A pair of roller skates slung across her shoulder was just the clue he needed to meet her the next evening at the local skating rink.

The newly weds settled on the south side of Des Moines where they lived for over 50 years. Son Stephen Lee was born prematurely and lived just a short few hours. A year later they welcomed a baby girl, Debra Marie. Deanna Jean arrived 3 years later and Denise Lynn completed our family as the doc assured Dad there were also girl’s softball teams.

They share many treasured memories. Trips to Colorado, camping at Springbook, and many joyous family gatherings. As if three daughters were not enough, he usually packed in tag-a-long friends - and even some future son-in-laws. These came in handy when the car broke down, which was a normal part of every road trip.

He was The World’s Best Grandpa. He sat through four-hour dance recitals, beginner band concerts, and football games in sub zero weather. When a grandchild asked, “Grandpa, will you push me on the swing?” there was never any hesitation - or anything more important at that moment.

He was beloved by all who knew him. Kind to a fault, he never uttered a harsh word about anyone. He endured kidney dialysis, recurrent infections and chronic pain, but never complained. His words to each one of us were simple and true ... put your faith in the Good Lord.

As Dale’s health declined, Donna was assisted in caring for him by a wonderful staff of caregivers. We are comforted to know she will have the ongoing support of this loving community and her “Patio Friends” at Walden Point.

Dale is survived by his wife, Donna; daughters, Debra (Mark) Gauldin, Deanna (Richard) May, Denise (Timothy) Hall; five grandchildren, Amy (Bobby) Gilliam, Kathleen Gauldin, Christopher Gauldin, Carrie May and Emily Hall; one great-grandchild (on the way!); brother, Dennis (Louese) Munyon; sister, Norma Wolf and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by their son, Stephen and his sister, Bonnie Schrodt.

Memorial contributions may be directed through the family in loving memory of Dale.
