Service Details

Marjorie “Marj” Peters was born in Garrison, Iowa, on July 29, 1922, and died on June 11, 2011, of cancer in Des Moines, Iowa. She was the daughter of Milo E. Shadle, Sr., and Harriet nee Olmsted. She was raised in Sac City, Iowa, with her brother Milo, Jr., and graduated from Sac City High School in 1940.

Marjorie married her high school sweetheart, Clarence L. Peters, son of August and Dora Peters of Lake View, in a secret ceremony on August 19, 1939, in Gates City, Virginia. They lived and raised their children on the family farm located between Sac City and Lake View for 50 years, until the death of Clarence. Marj and Clarence had eight children: Dianne, Donna, Peggy, Patricia, Perry, David, Penelope, and Polly (died after birth).

Marjorie was confirmed at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lake View in 1941, and remained a faithful member of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. In addition to belonging to some of the church service groups at various times, she was also a member of the Sac City WaTanYe Club and neighborhood Merry Meeters Club. She participated in the government Women’s Health Institute Hormone and Memory Study. Marj and Clarence enjoyed square dancing for a number of years with the Lake View Square Dancing Club.

As a 10th generation descendant of Mayflower passenger, George Soule, Marj was admitted as a member of the Mayflower Society in 2010. She was also admitted as an 11th generation descendent of Stephen Hopkins in 2011.

Marjorie clerked at the Sac City Coast-to-Coast for 20-plus years, which she enjoyed, until moving to Des Moines to be near children in 1993. While in Des Moines, she clerked at a Hallmark Store for a time.

Marjorie loved her children dearly, and was proud of them for pursuing higher education. She was also proud of her father’s army service during World War I, being awarded a Silver Star for gallantry in action. Her brother served for five years in the Navy during World War II.

Marjorie also loved reading and travel. She enjoyed three trips to Europe, two trips to Hawaii, and visiting most of the 50 states. She traveled in parts of Mexico and Canada, as well. There were several trips to California to visit her brother Milo and family.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence in 1985; daughter, Polly (at birth), daughter, Peggy Peck and her husband Jim Peck, son, Perry; and brother, Milo Shadle.
