James D. Burton, 83, died Wednesday, June 8, 2011, in Polk City. He was born October 16, 1927, in Warrensburg, MO to A.L. ”Buck” and Marjorie Burton.

James graduated from Warrensburg High School and earned a BS from Central Missouri State in 1953. He served in the Navy during the Pacific Theater of WWII and was a member of the American Legion Post 232 in Polk City. James retired from Polk County Sheriff’s Office as Chief Deputy in 1988.

James is survived by his wife of 28 years, Mary Burton; children, Robyn (Lance) Martin and James Burton; step-children, Guy (Cyndi) Cook, Shannon (Jamie) Peterson and Jane (Rick) Beck; 6 grandchildren and host of other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at Assumption Catholic Church, 1904 Sycamore Street, Granger, IA. Visitation will be held Monday evening from 5 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue.

Memorial contributions may be given to Animal Rescue league and American Legion in memory of James Burton.
