Mary Curtis, 78, passed away on Saturday, November 4, 2006 at Hospice Kavanagh House on 56th after a long bout with Parkinson’s Disease. A memorial service will be held at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home on November 25th.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Bertha Morris Dahlke; her father, Albert Dahlke; and her brother Charles. She married Max Curtis in 1950 and they have three children: Linda Curtis-Stolper, who lives in Newton with her husband David Stolper and their son Sean; James Curtis, who lives in Spring City, PA with his wife Cheryl Kaplan; and David Curtis, who lives in Rock Island, IL with his wife Dawn and their daughter Amy.
She was born in Greene County and graduated from Glidden High School. After moving to Des Moines she attended American Institute of Business and pursued a career as a secretary. She held positions in a law office, the Iowa State Senate, the Iowa House of Representatives, the Iowa Executive Council, an architectural firm, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
She enjoyed travel and people. Mary was active as president of Friendship Force, Circle leader at Westminster Presbyterian Church, and in Daughters of the American Revolution. She was very proficient at needlework and won many awards at the Iowa State fair for her needlepoint, counted cross stitch, and hardanger embroidery. She always supported her children’s activities, delighted in her grandchildren, and loved her family.
Mary will be missed by her family and many friends. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be sent to Scottish Rite Park Good Brotherhood Fund or Westminster Presbyterian Church.
