Service Details
Thomas Helms, 81, formerly of Winterset, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2011 in Springfield. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.
Tom was born in Panora and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He retired from Meredith Printing after 47 years, was an avid fisherman, and a member of the VFW.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Barbara; daughers, Teri Prather and Becky (Terry) Fisher; step-daughters, Sue Zaabel and Debbie (Mike) Abrahams; granddaughters, Brooke (Josh) Gillum and Lauren King; and brother, Richard.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vic and Mary; and sister, Irene Richardson; and beloved Golden Retriever, Teddy.

Tom, you will be missed so very much. I will always remember our Christmas Parties. That was the highlight of my year - to plan and cook for you and your family. We always ha so much fun.
Barb, I was shocked to hear of Tom's death,I know you are devastated. You and Tom were always closer than any married couple I know. I can only hope that your uears of happiness and your many good memories will enable you to live with thin=s sad loss.
I love you very much and have been and will think of you during this time.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Barb and the remainder of Tom's family.
We remember him as a very kind and gentle man always had a warm hand to hold out when he met you.
He will be missed, not only by his family, but also his friends and those of us who had the privilege to know him.
