Susan Trotter, 58, died on Friday, May 27, 2011, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 31, 2011, from 5 to 8 p.m. A memorial mass celebrating Susan’s life will be held on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Saint John and Saint Paul Catholic Church, 1401 1st Avenue S., in Altoona, Iowa.
Susan was born October 5, 1952, in Guthrie Center, Iowa. Susan was one of four children, the only daughter of Bill & Mafalda Makey. Susan worked for the State of Iowa for over 35 years before she retired in 2010.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Jeremy Hollar (Amanda Ladely) of Grinnell, Chari (Walter) Ghrist of Altoona; grandchildren, Tanae Hollar and McKenzie Ghrist; mother, Mafalda Makey; brothers, Bill Makey and Jim (Betty) Makey; nieces, nephews, and many wonderful friends.
Susan was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Trotter; father, William Makey; and brother, Michael Makey.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to the University of Iowa – Adult Transplant Unit or to your favorite charity.

Jeremy & Chari - Your mom was such a wonderful person, she will certainly be missed by many. We had many conversations at DHS about the two of you and she always had so much love and concern for you both. You have many good memories of your mom - always hold them close. May the Lord comfort you now and in the difficult days ahead. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I have worked for the Dept of Human Services for 20 yrs. and remember Susan. We may have never met in person, but remember her for her hard work here at DHS. Just wish she could have enjoyed her retirement longer !!!!

Strange conicidence as I was going through an old box of pictures today (an activity I had planned months ago with a professional organizer)and I found a single roladex card with your names on it--I knew I must let you know I was thinking about you both.

Sue was such a wonderful friend to my mother, as good a friend a person could ever have. She was so nice to my family during difficult times. I will always remember her kindness and thoughtfulness. My thoughts are with your family. I am very sorry for your loss.

I was so sorry to hear about Susan's death. Thinking of her brought back memories of high school in Guthrie Center. I was one year ahead of her in school and when she lived in Guthrie after graduation her and I were in a girls card club together.
The last time I saw Susan we were in a waiting room as she had brought her mother and I had brought my husband in for proceedures. We had such a nice visit and I will always remember her caring personality. Know that Guthrie Center is thinking of you..... Martha Stringer Buttler

I was saddened to read in the Sunday Register of Susan's passing. I have known her for quite a few years as a co-worker. I met her many years ago when she worked at the Carpenter office in DM. She was Susan Hollar at that time. Our desks were close and we often helped each other with our cases. Later, when she came to the Newton DHS office, we were again working together. She was always friendly and outgoing. My sympathy goes out to her mother and children. May God comfort you during this time. You are in my prayers.

I was so very sad to see that your mother passed away. I lived in the apartments in Ankeny when you did, with Stephanie and Stacey Bailey. We talked of your family often.
I worked for the State of Iowa too, and retired last June. I stopped in a few times to visit with your mother at DHS.

I am so very sorry to hear about Susan. I began working with her at DHS in the 1980's. She was so funny. I loved her sense of humor, especially the year before she retired at DHS. I will always have fond memories of Susan. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this trying time.
