Helen L. Radeke, 77, died Tuesday, April 10, 2007 in Des Moines from cancer. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, April 13, 2007 at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 211 Park Street NE, Mitchellville. Burial will follow at Mitchellville Cemetery.
Helen was born July 29, 1929 to William and Libushe Jersak in Hopkins, MN. She graduated from Hopkins High School in 1947; was a member of the Presbyterian Church; and worked at the Red Owl Grocery as a book keeper for 6 years in Hopkins. She moved to Phoenix, AZ in 1954 where she worked as a book keeper for Southwest Bell for over 10 years. Helen married Wayne in Phoenix in 1961 and they moved to Independence, MO for four years. During that time, Helen became the mother of two sons, Mark and Charlie. In 1966, they moved to Mitchellville where she was able to stay at home and raise her children.
Helen was an active and loving person. She was an avid bowler, bowling on women’s leagues for over 40 years. She was a faithful member of the Colfax Women’s League for over 27 years where she was Secretary/Treasurer for many years. Volunteering was Helen’s passion. She was honored as an Exceptional Volunteer for her work in the Mitchellville Cub Scouts, Mitchellville Little League, SE Polk Band Boosters, Mitchellville Senior Citizens Lunches, Mitchellville Library Fund Raising Project, and the Mitchellville Historical Society.
Helen is survived by her husband, Wayne Radeke; sons, Mark (Ginna) and Charlie (Veronica) Radeke, both of Naperville, IL; grandchildren, Ian, Quinn, Katherine, Hannah, Cameron, and Noah; brothers, George Jersak of Arlington, TX and William Jersak of Hopkins, MN; and a host of other family and beloved friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; granddaughter, Paige Helen Radeke; and grandson, Charles Joan Radeke.
Helen was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Memorial contributions may be given to Mitchellville Fire and Rescue or First Congregational United Church of Christ.
Visitation will be held 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Hamilton’s Mitchellville Funeral Home, 303 Center Avenue S.
