Harold Raymond “Ray” Thomas, 80, of Boone died Monday, April 9, 2007 at Mary Greely Hospital in Ames. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2007 at First United Methodist Church, 1001 Pleasant St. in Des Moines where he was a member for over 50 years. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St.
Mr. Thomas was born in Altoona and lived in Runnels, Des Moines and Ankeny all his life until he moved to the OES/Masonic Home in Boone. He was a WWII veteran with service in the Philippines and Germany and was an active member of the US Army Reserve for 30 years before retiring with the rank of Command Sergeant Major. Mr. Thomas was a letter carrier for 20 years and then transferred to the Department of Army as a staff training assistant and retired from the Department of the Army. After retirement, he worked for Des Moines Area Community College for five years as campus mailman. He was a Past Master of Union Park Masonic Lodge, a member of Des Moines Scottish Rite, ZA-GA-ZIG Shrine, the York Rite Bodies, Isabelle Chapter OES, North Gate OES, Des Moines High 12, Past President of the Ankeny Golden K Kiwanis Club and Highland Park American Legion Post.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife, Ivadell, daughters, Suzanne Thomas of Burbank, CA, Martha (Jim) Hladky of Omaha, NE, Marion Thomas of Schaumburg, IL, Maureen (Harold) Beirman of Ankeny and Sherry Ezell of Fort Worth, TX; sons, Archie (Judy) Hayes of Des Moines and Dennis (Candy) Hayes of Colorado Springs, CO. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to his church or the Scottish Rite Building Preservation Trust.
