Ly Lan Ung, 66, died Sunday evening May 15, 2011 at the Norwalk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Norwalk, IA. Visitation will be on Saturday, May 21, 2011 beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, with funeral services following at 11:30 a.m. Burial will take place Sunday at Haines Cemetery in Centerville, IA at 9:30 a.m.
Ly was born July 15, 1944 in Langson, North Vietnam. She worked for Iowa Health Systems for 13 years and retired when her health began to fail. Ly enjoyed gardening, cooking, and traveling. Her greatest love was spending time with her family, children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chi Fong Ung; her father, Ly Viet Bao, and mother, Hoang Thi Phung. Ly is survived by, her oldest daughter, Gin Simpson and husband, Jason Simpson of Cumming, IA; son, Sang Ung and wife, Nina Ung of Norwalk, IA; youngest daughter, Mui Myers and husband, Chris Myers of Unionville, MO; and seven grandchildren.

I have very fond memories of Ly when you all were living in Centerville and you mom was doing housekeeping for us on the farm. I admired her determination in learning to drive and all she wanted to do to have the best she could for her family. Also good memories of celebrating the Chinese New Year with your relatives. She faced life's chalanges with courage and faith.

I am sorry I didn't see this sooner. I am sorry to hear about your Mom & for your loss. I can't believe how many years we have all known each other. Now our Mom's will be able to see each other again after so many years.

Gin, Mui and Sang: I wish whole heartedly that I could be there with everyone. This is such a sad day. I'm glad now that she was in California when I went to visit my mom. She was able to meet my children and I will always be greatful for that. I spoke with Nina and she let me know that her passing was peacful and that she was surrounded by her family. I will be thinking about all of you tomorrow and I will forever cherish the memories of my childhood with all of you. Without your mom, I don't know where I would be.

Dear Gin, Sang and Mui,
I am sorry to hear of your loss of your Mother. I am the daughter of William and Estelle Johnson who lived on S. 15th St. in Centerville next door to you and your family. My parents always spoke highly of your Mother and enjoyed her many visits.
My Mother died in 2004 and my Father died in 2009.
You will be in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
