Service Details

Betty Ann Nicholls, 74, passed away peacefully at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny on May 11, 2011. The visitation will be on Sunday, May 15, 2011, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. A Rite of Burial service will be held Monday, May 16, 2011, at Saint Marks Episcopal Church, 3120 East 24th Street, at 10 a.m., followed by interment at Resthaven Cemetery next to her parents.

Betty was born June 3, 1936, in Minneapolis, to Charles and Ruth Pittsley. Des Moines was her home for 44 years, followed by 9 years in California, 15 years in Louisville, KY and the last 7 years in Ankeny, IA.

In 1955, she married Gary Nicholls in Des Moines, with whom she had two children, Lynn Rogers of Des Moines and Stephen Nicholls, deceased.

Betty was a member of Saint Marks Episcopal Church while living in Des Moines and Ankeny since 1970.

Betty’s thirst for knowledge could only be matched by her love of family and music. She was an accomplished pianist and violinist with degrees in Elementary Education from Grandview, Psychology from the University of California-Irvine, and a Masters degree in Psychology from Pepperdine University in California.

Her parents, her sister, Margaret and her son, Stephen, preceded her in death.

Betty is survived by her husband of 56 years, Gary Nicholls: daughter, Lynn Ann Rogers of Des Moines; son-in-law, Phil Rogers; daughter-in-law, Dawn Nicholls of Daytona Beach, FL; granddaughter, Courtnie Nicole Nicholls and three great-grandchildren, Cassidy Nicholls, Cailynne Nicholls and Matthew Stephen Nicholls, all of Daytona Beach.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saint Marks Episcopal Church.
