Edwin C. Allen (Capt. Ed), 95, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 15, 1915, in St. Anthony, Iowa. Ed developed a love for flying and the outdoors while working on remote air fields in Alaska during the mid 1940s. Ed retired from his boat business in 1977, and then received his ocean operators license. Captain Allen operated charter fishing boats in the Florida Keys and the Spirit of Des Moines river boat. Ed was also a certified auctioneer and a member of the Za Ga Zig Shrine. Besides fishing and flying, he most of all loved his family and many, many close friends.

Survivors include his wife, Ann; stepdaughter, Stasey Potts of Des Moines; sons, Larry (Cheryl), Myron (Shelly), Tim (Fiance Jennifer McCaslin); daughter, Judy Willey (Tom) from Altoona; son-in-law, Peter Logli (Rebecca) from Tierra Verde, Forida; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and brother, John of Woodstock Virginia. Preceding him in death were first wife, Dana; daughter, Kathy Logli; brother, Ralph and sisters Ruby Shillington and Opal Allen.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW in Altoona. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30, at the Altoona Christian Church, 2890 1st Avenue S. Memorial contributions may be made to the Taylor House Hospice, or to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
