Service Details

Velva Jean Sloan passed away on Friday, May 6, 2011. Visitation will be Sunday, May 8, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. The funeral service will be on Monday, May 9, at 11 a.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1385 Buffalo Road, West Des Moines.

Velva was primarily a homemaker with an occasional part-time
position. She was a very talented seamstress and artist. She loved country western music and as a young woman sang in a country western band. She was the scorekeeper for the Minburn Molley’s, a women’s softball team.

She will be greatly missed by her son, James W. Sloan; daughters, Pam (Jad) VanDerZyl, and Sandra (David) Cunningham; sisters, Nona Shaw and Lavola Ray; sister-in-law, Evelyn Ostrander; grandchildren, Rene (Dusty) Sims, Teresa (David) Sukhram, Rachel Sloan, Jason (Kathy) Patrick, James (Ginney) Patrick, Kenneth Sloan, Richard Sloan, Scott (Kelli) Olson, Jeanine Koch, Cheryl (Rod) Hoffman, Charlotte Sloan, Samantha Onnen, and Colby Onnen; 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Velva was preceded in death by her husbands, Leon W. Paler and James L. Sloan.
