Service Details

LaVon Hoffman, 84, was born February 26, 1927, to Richard and Mary (Lint) Banning in Des Moines. She died Saturday, April 30, 2011, at the Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

LaVon graduated from North High School, and was a life-long member of Highland Park Presbyterian Church. She volunteered throughout her life including Calvin Community, election polls, and a luncheon matron at Rice Middle School. LaVon worked as a secretary at Des Moines Drug and retired from Equitable Life Insurance. A special memory will always be when she worked at Sergeants Café when she returned from Las Vegas. LaVon enjoyed watching wildlife and the airplanes take off later in life.

LaVon is survived by her son, Gerold Hoffman; granddaughters, MaVilma (Jimmy) Windham and Tina Marie (Chris) Atkinson; great-grandchildren, Jayde and Jewell Windham; sister, Lucile Powers; step-daughter and caregiver, Trudy McCormik; two nieces; one nephew; and a host of other family and beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harvey Hoffman; second husband, Donald Dew; brother, Warren P. Banning; and sister, Marvel Banning.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2011, at Highland Park Presbyterian Church, 321 Euclid Avenue. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. A private burial of cremated remains will occur at Pine Hill Cemetery at a later date.
