Service Details

On October 9, 1927, Dorothy Louise Plum was born to William and Doris Shepherd of Des Moines, Iowa, where she lived her whole life.

She was survived by her daughter, Margo Plum, and her partner Mary G.; three grandchildren, Briana L.N.B. Gordon (Stephanie), John Castle (Amber), and Christian Plum (Jamie); six great-grandchildren, Dakota J.T. Gordon, Reed M. Castle, Timmy Schwartz Plum, and Essence, O'Ryan, and Jasmine Castle; her sisters, Lois Emery and Marty Shepherd; her brother, Billy Shepherd; and her cousin Loretta Pike. She was met in heaven by her mother, father, husband, and Aunt Luella.

At the young age of 16, she began working as a waitress and cook at Tommy’s Good Food on East 15th and Grand. After many years she went to the Mark III Lounge as a manager/bartender. There she met all of her wild and crazy, life-long friends. She got her ears pierced for the first time there! Thank you for all the laughter, fun, and tears we shared!

After taking brief rest and raising two of the three grandchildren, she went to work at Kelly’s Little Nipper, where she cooked lunch for all her friends - they were not just customers to her. Special thanks to Lanora for making work so enjoyable. Thank you to Ernie for a second chance, for hiring an old lady that was not ready to retire. A big thank you to Lester Brewer, who bought Kelly’s. Louise worked there until she retired at the age of 75 years young.

To the Earth Angels at the Taylor House, God bless you times ten, thank you's times one hundred, and hugs and kisses times one thousand! We will be forever grateful for loving Grandma like your own.

Grandma, we love you and miss you!

On Friday, April 15, 2011, at 4:22 p.m., at age 83, Louise passed away from lung cancer, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines.
