Patrick Gallagher, 89, passed away April 16, 2011, at the VA Hospital in Des Moines. He was born December 11, 1921, in Waukon, Iowa, to Patrick and Mary Gallagher. He joined the U.S. Army in 1940 and served for over 20 years. He was a decorated WWII veteran and received a Purple Heart as well as many other medals and honors. Patrick married Roberta Book on February 2, 1946, at St. Patrick’s Church in Waukon. He and his wife Roberta spent 61 years of traveling the world and had a very special bond. He was an avid golfer, attending the Waukon Golf Tournament every spring. He was a member of the VFW Post 9662 and Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Church.
Patrick is survived by two sisters, Rosanna (Bernard) Mayer of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, and Mary Madonna (Carl) Lodico of Las Vegas, Nevada; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta Book Gallagher; brother, Francis Gallagher; and nephew, Earl Mayer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Church, 510 E 1st Street, Ankeny, Iowa, 50021, with visitation starting at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Ankeny Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Church in loving memory of Patrick.

I was sorry I was not able to attend Pat's funeral services., He and my husband, Ron Blair, were "buddies" for many a year, golfing and keeping a stool warm at either the Clipper or at the VFW., They were great friends, I too, knew him and Bobbi for years, and she and I were golf partners over those years., What great people!!. Indeed I knew Pat from the Waukon Golf Tournament for many years, as I have played there for the last forty years and I am sure Pat played there before I did for some years. His mother Mary was a sister to my dad Martin Collins. The Collins children of this family became orphans at an early age. Martin Collins and Ann Collins died 85 days apart, in the last days of 1907 and the early days of 1908. (I do not have the complete information on my computer so I could be in error by some days)Pat Gallagher was a true Irishman and I am sure where he touched in people lives, he is well remembered. May he rest well there with family and the Good Lord of us all. Rest in peace there Pat, as there can never be too many Irishmen, be it here or with the Good Lord.

Pat was wonderful family friend for our (Bud and Helen Campbell) family in Waukon throughout our lives. I grew up watching some of the finest euchre games ever played in our kitchen with Roberta and my mom going up against Pat and my dad. Wonderful stories were woven into each visit by Pat and Roberta with them sharing their life experiences and travels around the world. Pat and Bud were brothers in every sense. Pat will be deeply missed and has left a wonderful legacy of memories for my family. My deepest condolences to all of Pat's extended family.
