Raymond Joseph Lipovac Sr., age 82, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Friday, April 15, 2011.

Visitation will be held Monday, April 18, 2011, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Family reflections will begin at 5:30 p.m., with a rosary to begin at 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 19, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Des Moines with burial to follow at Glendale Cemetery.

Ray’s family includes the love of his life, wife Jayne of 63 years, his children Kathleen (Ron), son Ray, son Tom (Kathi), and daughter Sheila (John); grandchildren Zachary (Melissa), Drew, Scott, Allison, Lisa, Kaitlyn, Dylan, and Dominick; brothers Edward and Gene Lipovac; sister-in-law Margaret Baratta; cousins; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His greatest love was his family. He especially enjoyed precious moments with his grandchildren. Ray entertained family and friends by singing as a young man at weddings, funerals, and in the church choirs and later in life anywhere and at anytime he found an audience.

Ray retired as a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier after 35 years of service. Prior to the Post Office he worked for Frank C. Pigneri Construction in Des Moines.

Among his many interests were reading, sketching, woodcarving, dancing, challenging crossword puzzles and going for long walks. Examples of his artwork were honored at the Iowa State Fair. He maintained an extensive library including the collective works of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) and Pope John XIII. Ray’s favorite teams to cheer for were the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Bears, but especially every one of the teams that included his grandchildren.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Wenceslaus and Maria; brothers Milo, John, Steve, Vance, and Maurice; sisters Mary, Catherine, and Vera; and in-laws, Frank and Mary Leo Pigneri.

The family is appreciative to the Genesis Staff, Iowa Hospice, the Pioneer Columbus Senior Center, Monsignor Frank Chiodo, and the many family visitors for their compassion, concern, and support.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Anthony’s Church, where he was a lifetime member, Iowa Hospice, or to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of Des Moines.
