Robert J. Montgomery

Robert John “Bob” Montgomery, 72, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away April 1, 2011, after an 8-year battle with lung cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be held Sunday, April 3, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m., and memorial service April 4, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA. Interment will be in Akron, Ohio.

Bob was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He grew up in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. After serving with the Marine Corps for several years, he brought his family to Ohio where he worked with the school districts. Bob moved his family to Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 1979, where he worked for many years with the Council Bluffs School District. Bob spent his retirement years in Des Moines, IA, spoiling his happy and seven loving grandchildren.

Bob is survived by his loving children: Reid (Jenny), Mike (Sari), and Cathy (Terry), and his 7 beautiful grandchildren: Jack, Jacob, Evan, Samuel, Maggie, Ellie, and Lauren. He also is survived by sisters Margaret “Peg” (Dick) Stark and Linda (Duane) Spiker, and brother Phillip Montgomery, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 30 years, Margaret "Marge" Campbell Montgomery of Silver Lake, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bob’s memory to the American Cancer Society or the Nature Conservancy.
