Service Details
Marlan Gene Braet, 69, passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. His celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, March 30 at 10:30 a.m. at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Parkway in West Des Moines.
Marlan was born on May 23, 1941 to Art and Lanor Braet in Toronto, IA. He graduated from Welton High in 1959, joined the U.S. Army and then completed his studies at Iowa State University with a degree in Animal Science. Marlan worked for Iowa State University in the Animal Science Department until his retirement in 2000. He then worked for Niman Ranch.
On the personal side of his life, Marlan married Diane Buffington in 1969. They were blessed with two children, Lindsay and Matt. Marlan enjoyed spending time with his family and attending Matt’s baseball games. He was always willing to help others and didn’t know a stranger. He enjoyed playing cards, gardening, watching sports, and raising pigs.
Marlan is survived by his wife of 42 years, Diane; daughter, Lindsay (Brandon) Metzger; son, Matt; grandchildren, Alexis and Ashton Metzger.

So sorry to read about Marlan's passing. Want you to know your family will be in our prayers as you grieve your loss. I really appreciate the time spent with him while we went through our grade school years. I have good memories of him coaching our aau b-ball teams and him being so active and passionate in the county fair pig shows. Your dad was a great guy!

Marlan was very dear to me. I agree with what it says in his obituary - he never knew a stranger.
He was the most positive person I ever met, always full of excitement about the world and love for all of you. When Alexis and Ashton came into his life he was overwhelmed with happiness. He spoke of all of you often, always with pride and sincerity.
I will miss him. I will miss his cheerfulness. And I have to admit I will miss his delicious pork! Marlan was a fine human being.

Diane, Matt and Lindsay - We were saddened to read of Marlan's death in the Story City Herald yesterday. You have our deepest sympathies. Your family is a part of our memories of the boys playing baseball as we visited and cheered them on.

We are so sorry for your loss. We did not realize that Marlan was sick. You have our sympathy. We are still in Arizona, but leave on Sat. to go up and see Lori and family, then home. Talk to you when we get home.
