Alfred John Simon died March 26, 2011 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. He was born in Des Moines November 1, 1921 to Charles and Ida Simon. He attended Visitation Catholic School and Dowling High School.

Alfred served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was missing in action in Normandy after the D-Day invasion in June 1944. He was later found in a prisoner of war camp, released in May 1945. His military honors include the Combat Infantryman Badge and Bronze Star.

He served six years in the Air Force, stationed in Nevada. He worked for the U.S. Post Office in Las Vegas until his retirement. Alfred returned to Des Moines in 2004.

He is survived by his brother, Edward (Beverly), and five nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, four sisters and nine nieces and nephews. At his request there will be no services and private interment at Glendale at a later date.
