Walter E. Mason Sr., 87, died Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at the Veterans Home in Marshalltown. He was born September 3, 1923, to William and Agnes Mason in Estherville.

Walter served in the Army during WWII, where he was in the 1st Armored Division, 45th Tank Battalion, in the European Theater in Germany. He was very proud of his service, and took the time to share his stories.

Walter worked as a diesel mechanic at International Harvester and then Charles Gabus Ford. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching Westerns, and treasure hunting with his metal detector.

Walter is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Dorothy Mason; children, Robert (De) Mason, Gary Mason, Sharon Manthei, Sandra (Paul) Knight, Michael (Lee Ruth Robinson) Mason, Thomas (Linda) Mason, Walter (Deana Belt) Mason Jr., and Christie Glandon; 24 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret, Lucille, and Helen; sister-in-law, Dee Mason; and a host of other family and beloved friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Randy Mason; grandsons, Todd Lathrop and Robert Kirkman; three great-grandchildren; and brothers, Dave and Ray Mason.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW, with burial to follow at 12:30 p.m. at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter. Family will greet visitors from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
