Elizabeth "Bettie" Schlattman

Elizabeth Ruth Schlattman, 83, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, IA. A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2011 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines with a rosary at 6 p.m. Funeral services will be on Saturday, March 26 at 12:00 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi, 7075 Ashworth Road in West Des Moines. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.

Bettie was born on January 5, 1928 in St. Peter, MN to Emma (Zimmerman) and Aloyous Guggemos. She graduated from St. Catherine University with an RN degree. This led to a career in nursing and nursing instruction in the St. Paul, MN area where she and her first husband, Joseph Stiegel, were married for 23 years and were blessed with three children. Later, Bettie married Robert Schlattman and they relocated to Fort Worth, Texas. While there, Bettie was a nursing home administrator. In 1998, Bettie and Bob moved to central Iowa to be near family. Here, Bettie found her career calling when she began instructing little girls in the art of sewing. She not only got to express her individual creativity but she was able to pass it on to a new generation.

To everyone’s great sadness, Bettie was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Schlattman; son, James Stiegel; and brothers Euguene and Ralph Guggemos. She is survived by her sisters, Lois Kobler and Mae Richie; son, Thomas (Donna) Stiegel; daughter, Kathryn May; and grandchildren, Robert and Joanna May and Joey and Matt Stiegel.
