Service Details

Mary Josephine Diehl, 89, of Indianola died on April 2, 2007 at her home. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the services, with reception following the services at the funeral home.
Mary was born on March 25, 1918 to Joseph and Jenny Patten. As a young girl she spent many joyful times with her beloved brother Bart Huff Patten and granddad Burt Huff in Bussey, Iowa. She attended East High School in Des Moines. On January 24, 1936 she married Woodrow Wilson Diehl, they were married 70 years before his death on April 13, 2006. She and Woody spent their early married life in Berwick, Iowa then moved to Carlisle and then to Indianola. Mary was always the gracious hostess and had hosted visits to her family farm from Presidents Lyndon Johnson and Jimmy Carter. She enjoyed Indian artifact hunting or “rocking” as she used to call it. She was a member of the Des Moines Christian Club, the Berwick Congregational Church and the Berwick Women’s Club where she served as president from 1957-1958.
She is survived by her son Ted B. Diehl (Valerie) of Indianola, her granddaughters Christy L. Diehl of Indianola and Wendy J. McGinnis (Matt) of Indianola, her great grandchildren Dorisann, Mary and Jonathan McGinnis of Indianola, her nephew Michael L. Patten of Livonia, Michigan as well as many loving friends.
