Service Details
A memorial service for Sally Barnes Cobb, 82, West Des Moines, will be held Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 5720 Urbandale, Des Moines.
Reverends Elizabeth Popplewell and Sharon Mahood will preside.
Surviving Sally are daughters Christine and Barbara of West Des Moines, and Virginia of Dallas Center; six grandchildren, her sister, Harriett (Don) Richards of Fairmont, MN, and her sisters-in-law Genevieve Barnes, Virginia Beach, VA, Carol (Edward) Hofert, Mt. Prospect, IL, and Sally Lou (Harry) Elegreet, Albuquerque, NM; numerous nieces and nephews, and their spouses.
Sally was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis C. "Bing" Cobb, her brother, Commander Harry G. Barnes, Jr., and her parents, Gould Lowrey Barnes and Harry Grinnell Barnes, Sr.
Sally was born in Grinnell, IA, but lived in Iowa City where she graduated from City High School. She graduated from Grinnell College in 1950, marrying Bing three days before graduation. From Grinnell, they moved to Iowa City, Evanston and Park Ridge, Illinois, before returning to Iowa in 1956.
Memorials to honor Sally are being directed to the West Des Moines Police Department's K-9 unit for the support, training and equipment for police dogs.

Our deepest sympathy to you girls. We go a long way back with your parents; we graduated from Grinnell a few years after they did, and they welcomed us to Des Moines, when Jim started work at the Iowa-Des Moines Bank.They invited us to attend St. Andrew's, where I was confirmed. When I went into labor with our second daughter, your family took in our First Daughter, until Jim could leave my side. (Fr. Kem spent those hours with him until the baby was born)

Barbara - I continue to hold you and your family in my thoughts and hope that shared memories of your mom provide each of you with peace. Through your stories of her, I will always think of her cleaning the gutters in only the way she would :)

Christi, Barbara, and Virginia,
I am sorry for the loss of Sally but feel blessed to have known her and to have witnessed your love and care for her. Seeing her always added a bright spot to my day. You are the proof that she was a great mother by the way you live your lives and carry on with your own children.
