Janaki Vaitheswaran
March 13, 2011
Janaki Vaitheswaran, born on October 1, 1930, passed away on Sunday, March 13, 2011.
Janaki was born in south-central India to a family of well-known lawyers and public servants. She graduated from Osmania University in India with a Bachelors and Master's degree in Economics.
Janaki met her husband, Ramakrishna Vaitheswaran, during college and they were married on May 21, 1958. Though she possessed professional qualifications to pursue any career, she devoted herself fulltime to her family, both immediate and extended, and to her community.
She migrated to the United States with her family in 1967. In 1973, she moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which she regarded as her home, and where she remained until 2009. She set up a loving and comfortable home for her husband and two children and volunteered considerable time to support the broader Indian community.
Janaki was accomplished and humorous, and an affectionate mentor and friend. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, son-in-law, two grandchildren, five brothers and sisters, many cousins, nieces and nephews, and countless friends who will sorely miss her.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hindu Temple Association of Eastern Iowa, P.O. Box 10573, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52410.

I was so sorry to hear of your wife's death. I'm very sorry this message is so late in coming, but between vacation and the start of the school year, I got behind on reading Mackinac postings.
I have warm memories of your family and am sure this must be a difficult time for you and your daughters. Please know that people from your past, even people you almost certainly don't remember are thinking of you in this time of loss.

Dear Anu & Suneetha,
Our deepest sympathy goes out to you and all of your family. We were privileged to meet your Mother through the two of you as you and our daughters, Sara and Jo, became close friends in Junior High and High School plus the fact that you were our neighbors. She will be greatly missed but always in our hearts. My Mother has been gone for over thirty years and I still miss her and would love to be able to talk to her and tell her about my grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Remember you are in our hearts.
Sincerely,
Jobie & Pat Atwater

Sending deepest sympathy from my family to your family on this sudden loss. Having met Janaki through Suneetha only a few times, I simply wanted to express how much admiration I have for your entire family.
Throughout the years, I have heard so many beautiful things from Suneetha about her mom, so I can only imagine the loss you must now all feel. Clearly, Janaka lived a life of kindness, love and compassion. I am very thankful for having the privilege to experience Janaki's bright light not only in her, but through Suneetha, who has been a dear friend to me on so many occasions and for many years.
Again, thinking of you all and remembering you in my family's prayers.
Love,
Karen, Nicholas and Alex Wan
