Ruth Blome
March 10, 2011
Ruth Evangeline Blome, 99, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, March 10, 2011. She is rejoicing in the promise of God’s word and her reunion with her parents: Carl and Bertha Blome, and her brothers: Lawrence and Richard Blome.
Ruth was born May 22, 1911 on a farm in Victor, Iowa. Early in life she learned the values of Christian faith and hard work which she carried throughout her life. Her love of education led her to achieve a master’s degree in education from Drake University; become a school teacher; spend one year teaching military service children in Germany during WWII; become an elementary school principal; and ultimately become instrumental in implementing the Des Moines Public School’s Gifted and Talented program in the early 1970s. Even after her retirement from teaching in 1976, Ruth continued as a consultant for Heartland Area Education Association, advising parents and teachers of gifted and talented students. She also enjoyed Bible Study and teaching her faith; and for 27 years she led “Ruth’s Circle” at First Baptist Church of Greater Des Moines. Ruth was the consummate teacher and one of her philosophies was “to spend every minute in life learning something new”. Anyone who knew her appreciated her encouragement, positive motivation, and great humor.
Survivors include her brothers: Emerson and Norman Blome of Des Moines; sister-in-law Edna Blome; nephews: Bruce, Dan, and Randy Blome; niece Carol Michell; their spouses and great nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 14, 2011, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines, with burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, also at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Greater Des Moines in loving memory of Ruth.

Aunt Ruth was such a joy to know and learn from. My sympathy to Norman and Emerson for your loss. I know she is at peace and in the Lord's company and enjoying family and friends that passed before her.
