Max J. Van Rees

Max J. Van Rees, 72, was born to Jack and Dorothy (Butt) Van Rees in Lynnville, Iowa, and moved to Pella as a young boy. He graduated from Pella Community Schools, where he lettered in track, baseball, football, and basketball.

He married Delores Vandenberg on April 22, 1957, and to this union three daughters were born. He served three years in the U.S. Navy. After being discharged, he started Grimes Concrete in 1974, and later expanded to GNA Concrete and Iowa Pavers. He was a pilot and an avid motorcyclist.

Max was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jud; half brother, Dick Butt; parents-in-law, Abe and Edna Vandenberg. He is survived by his wife of 53 years; daughters, Jan (Falcon) Jackson, Randi Van Rees, Viki (Steve) Sauerman; grandson, Cory Sauerman; nieces, Rita Moneysmith, Judy Clark, Carol Floden, Christina Groenenboom, Lori Portinga; and nephews, Mark Vandenberg and Mark Van Rees.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Friday, March 4, 2011, at Meredith Drive Reformed Church, 5128 Meredith Drive, Des Moines, with cremation to follow service. Family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines.
