Dennis “Doc” Simmer, 70, passed away surrounded by his loving family Wednesday, February 23, 2011, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. He was born April 15, 1940, in Fansler, Iowa to Leo and Ethel Simmer.
Doc is survived by his loving wife, Sue of almost 52 years; sons, Tim Simmer and Daryl (Tamii) Simmer; sister-in-law, Coleen (Emmet) Deets; grandchildren, Shailien Simmer, Dawson (Sarah) Simmer, Denni Simmer, Danny Simmer, Jobe Hinders, Suzanne Allen and Sara Allen; great-grandchildren, Keagin Simmer, Aubrii Simmer, Eva Allen and Ella Loutsch; six brothers and three sisters; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family members.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, February 28, 2011, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines. Funeral services will be 12 p.m., Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Polk City Cemetery in Polk City, Iowa.

Sue, I'm so sorry to read that devhnnis is gone........ I have tried reaching you many times, but to no avail, now I know you were spending all the time together as much as possible....... again I am so sorry, you lost a good man,husband,but most of all, a loyal friend. Aunt Sue, Tim & Daryl and families, I am not great with words but since I can't be there I wanted to let you know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all today. I have a bunch of great memories of Uncle Denny over the years from fishing at the spillway as a kid to sharing a game of golf and a beer as an adult. I only wish my kids would have had the opportunity to spend some time with him. All I know is today I am sad and I know our family and your community has lost a real treasure.
