Leonard W. Ashburn, 66, passed away February 23, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 27, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens.
Leonard was born May 7, 1944, in Lamoni, Iowa. He retired from the state of Iowa as a weights and measures inspector.
He is survived by his wife, Victoria; children, David (Bobbi) Ashburn, Phyllis Harkey; grandchildren, Melissa, Allison, Ryan and Justin; siblings, James (Louise) Ashburn, Lois Carmichael, Wilma Derrick, Bert (Kathy) Ashburn, Richard Ashburn and Melba (Dwayne) Smith; 20 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Monroe and Velva Ashburn; sister, Ellen, granddaughter, Michelle; nephew, Oscar; and brother-in-law, Elbert.

Goodbye Uncle Leonard! I'll remember your smile and laughter. You were kind and gentle, I will remember the stories you told at family reunions. I was so glad to speak to you on the phone, you were a great uncle and I was blessed to have you in my life.
I know I'll see you again one day, and I'll look forward to getting that hug!

Leonard was a close friend of ours for the past 20 some years, he will missed be missed and always in our thoughts and prayers.

So sorry for the loss of your Dad, Phyllis, and your Grandpa, Ryan and Justin. I know you will all miss him greatly! Phyllis- 20 years and going is a long friendship. We have been through a lot over the years together and always there for each other. I'm here if you need me, day or night. Won't be the first time you have needed me in the middle of the night!!! My prayers are with the entire family at this time. I have such great memories of Uncle Leonard growing up. I was blessed by being his neice. I encourage all of you to share your fond memories with eachother and remember how much he loved each of us.

I worked with Leonard in Weights and Measures at IDALS. Leonard was a good man and I enjoyed getting emails from him even after he retired.

Our condolences to your family. Leonard was a mentor of mine on L.P. gas inspections back when I started with the state in '86. I've also let the guys who knew Leonard about his passing. I regret being unable to attend Sunday, but believe Mike Norris will be there. Again our heart-felt sympathies to the family.
