Douglas W. Wiesner, 71, passed from this life February 14, 2011, at the Kavanagh House. Doug was born in Des Moines January 27, 1940, to Helen and Marvin Wiesner. He was a graduate of North High School. After attending Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., he graduated from Iowa State University in 1960 and was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He served in the United States Army Reserve. In 1963 he married Malinda Hawkins and together they raised 2 sons.

Doug’s career was at The Bankers Life, now Principal Financial Group, where he was a vice president. He was a Fellow in the Life Management Institute, a Chartered Life Underwriter and president of the Des Moines chapter of the Institute on Home Office Life Underwriters.

He was a member of Plymouth United Church of Christ, where he served on several boards. Doug was an active member of the West Des Moines Kiwanis, a reading mentor at Hillside Elementary School and enjoyed reading for the sight impaired at Iowa Reading Information Services. He served as Youth Homes of Mid America Foundation President. When his boys were young, he was a coach for Little League teams.

Leisure activities have included baseball, volleyball, RAGBRAI biking, tennis, hunting and fishing. For many summers he and Malinda enjoyed time at their home on Lake Thunderhead, MO.

In addition to his mother, Helen of Carroll and his wife Malinda, survivors include a son Bryan and his wife Tiffany and their daughters, Ainsley, Isabel and Lindley of Lake Forest, Ill.; a sister, Christine and husband Bill Simmons of Carroll; and nephew Christopher Carlson and wife Kelly of North Liberty. Doug was preceded in death by his father and a son Kyle.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am Saturday, February 19, at Plymouth United Church of Christ. There will be a visitation from 5 to 8 pm Friday, February 18, at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. A private family burial service will be at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
