Forrest “Frosty Speed, 94, of Des Moines went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 13, 2011. He was born October 8, 1916, near Pleasantville, Iowa, to John and Flossie (Hillabolt) Speed. On July 26, 1937, he married Helen Chase, whom he cherished all of his days. They lived in Carlisle, Iowa, for 59 years.

Forrest served in the United States Army in Germany from July 9, 1945 to July 16, 1946. He was then honorably discharged. He was a skilled bricklayer for many years. He then worked for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement. Forrest loved working outside, especially in his garden. He also enjoyed helping his family and friends with their projects. He was a quiet and humble man who loved his Lord, his family and his friends.

For many years Forrest was a faithful member of Missionary Baptist Church in Carlisle. More recently he and Helen became members of Lighthouse Community Church, where they attended and served until their health no longer allowed.

Left to treasure his memory are Helen, his loving wife of 73 years, son, David (Donna) Speed of Carlisle, daughter, Mitzi (Richard) Blahnik of Des Moines, granddaughters, Lori Carrara and Lea (Sal) Carreon of Des Moines; many nieces and nephews; also more recently friends made at Fleur Heights Assisted Living in Des Moines.

Forrest was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Faye Crawford and Jean Crawford, and one brother Mark Speed. Services will be held on Wednesday, February 16, 2011, at 2:00 pm. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at Hamilton’s Southtown, 5400 SW 9th Street in Des Moines.
