Archie Edwin Gaddis, age 76, passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at Trinity Center Luther Park after a lengthy illness. He was born June 6, 1934, in Des Moines to Howard and Florence (Olin) Gaddis.

He served the 56th Signal Company in the United States Army from 1956-1958 at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. Archie worked for Delevan Manufacturing as a gauge and layout inspector for 24 years, and retired from Ankeny Tire and Battery as a mechanic after 19 years of service.

Archie enjoyed woodworking, playing cards with his friends, and traveling to different parts of the country. He appreciated nature and found joy in spending time at the lake fishing and watching for eagles. Archie’s family was extremely important to him and they will remember him as a fix-it man, as well as a loving father and husband.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Delores “Dee” Gaddis of Ankeny; children, Julie (Dean) and granddaughter, Katie Folkmann of Newhall, and Jeff (Marsha) Gaddis of Clive; brother, Gene (Barb) Gaddis; sister, Florence “Susie” Brown of Des Moines; sister-in-law, Marilyn (Jim) Forster of Greensboro, NC; niece, Lori Vestal and nephews, Jim Brown and Mike Gaddis; as well as other beloved family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Joseph “Bud” Brown.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, February 12, 2011, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines. A private family inurnment will occur at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ankeny United Methodist Church or Alzheimer’s Research in loving memory of Archie.
