Alvin Edward Overton, 73, passed away unexpectedly at his home Wednesday, February 9, 2011.

Alvin was born March 24, 1937, in Des Moines. He graduated from North High School and attended Drake University. Alvin joined the Des Moines Police Department in 1964, concluding his career as a Sergeant in 1994. He had a love for animals, the outdoors, a passion for hunting and fishing. Alvin enjoyed Jeopardy, trivia game shows, jumbles and crossword puzzles. He also loved cooking for his family.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Sharon; children, Tim (Clesta) Overton, Sharon (Doog) Harmon, Shirley (Dan) Evans, Suellen Overton, Sandra (Don) Ouimet and Sally Overton; step-children, Terri Clark and Rob (Kari) Fogarty; brother, Roy Overton; sisters, Mariam Todd and Mildred Floyd; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia; children, David, Michael, Alvin, Jr. and Sarah, all of whom died in a car-train accident on July 1, 1976; mother, Clara Hansen; father, Roy Overton, Sr.; sisters, Margaret Overton and Delores Fath; and his step-son, Ric Fogarty.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, February 14, 2011, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
