Hazel A. Newman

Hazel Amelia Newman, 94, was born April 24, 1916, in Dows, Iowa, to Herman and Sophie (Peterson) Kreitlow. She passed away February 5, 2011, at home. Hazel grew up on a farm near Dows. She moved to Des Moines in 1944 and raised her family here. She LOVED genealogy, spent many hours researching, and created for her family a Kreitlow Family History Book. She enjoyed all kinds of puzzles - especially crossword puzzles.

Hazel is survived by her two daughters, Karen Smith and Loretta Taylor; son, Lee Lyons; step-son, Lawrence Newman; grandchildren, Donn Stanley, Debra Baldwin, Donna Sprague, DeAnn Umphress, Ryan Taylor, Lynn Blevins, Julie Johnson, Jeffrey Lyons, and Kim Hutchins; sixteen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Vivian Greiman of Goodell, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers and three sisters; husband, Charles Newman; sons; Dennis and Verner “Larry” Lyons; and step-daughter, Mary Williams.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, February 7, 2011, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Funeral services will be 12 p.m. Tuesday, February 8 at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Glendale Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Wesleylife Hospice.
