Marvin Overton

Marvin Gene Overton passed away February 4, 2011, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston at the age of 84. Services will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, February 8, 2011, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines, with burial to follow at Avon Cemetery. Family will greet visitors two hours prior to the funeral service.

Marvin was born April 9, 1926, in Des Moines, IA, to Esta and O.C. Overton. He proudly served in WWII, including time in Germany with who became his lifelong friend, Don Schwarck. Upon his return to Des Moines, Marvin married Marilyn Hollingshead in 1947, to which three children were born. He retired from John Deere, and remained very active tinkering in his garage and enjoying his grandchildren.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Des Moines; daughter, Stephenie Mabe of Buffalo, MN; and son, Greg (Joan Beard) of West Des Moines, IA. His grandchildren include Sharif (Vince) Welch; Shanna (Michael) Golden; Jeremiah (Erin) Overton; Josh (Jennicca) Mabe; Tori (Cary) Worley; Sabrina (Steve) Casteel; Derek Dales; and Levi (Brandie) Overton. He also leaves behind 16 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his very beloved daughter, Claudia Dales, who we know greeted him immediately after his death. Others that preceded Marvin are his parents, his brother Don, sister Ardith, two infant granddaughters, and son-in-law Thomas Mabe.
