Mildred M. "Millie" Smith

Mildred Marie Smith, 82, died Thursday, January 27, 2011, at Fleur Heights Care Center in Des Moines. She was born September 5, 1928 in Sheffield, Alabama to Charlie and Luva (Ranck) Arnett.

She worked for AMF Western Tool and Midwest Bag until her retirement. Mildred attended various Assembly of God churches. She enjoyed playing bingo and cards,
and was well known for her Christmas cookies.

Mildred is survived by her children, Sharon (Richard) O’Brien, Charles (Glenda) Smith, Esther (Gary) Jahnke, and Stephen (Ann) Smith; 15 grandchildren; many great and great-great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Harry and Charles; and sisters, Edith, Lillian Rae, and Charlene.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m., Monday, January 31, 2011, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. Family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Rescue League or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in loving memory of Mildred.
