Richard “Rick” Joseph Garneau, Sr., 57, passed away on Wednesday, March 28, 2007, in Bentonville, Arkansas while on a golf outing with friends.
The wake will be Sunday, April 1, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hamilton Southtown with the Rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be at St. Anthony Church, Monday, April 2, 10:00 am.
Richard was born on Feb. 26, 1950 in Woonsocket, RI. He enlisted in the Air Force at 17 and served in Viet Nam from1968-1969. He was then assigned to England Air Force Base, La., where he met Marie Ashley, who he married in 1971. He retired from the Air Force with almost 24 years of service, where he earned his associates degree in pharmacology. He served as a Pharmacy Tech for the last 17 years of his career.
He is survived by his loving wife Marie and their four children Rick Garneau, Jr. of Des Moines, IA; Renee Garneau of Alexandria, La.; Angela (DD) Shelton of Alexandria, La. and Tim (Fran) Garneau of West Des Moines; a brother Ray (Sharon) Garneau of Des Moines and three sisters Florence McConville of Schenectady, NY; Nancy (Bob) Cullerton of North Smithfield, RI; and Phyllis Sawtelle of Woonsocket, RI.; his mother-in-law Jeanette Ashley of Alexandria, La. and many nieces and nephews.
Richard “Pepe” has six grandchildren: Brittany Garneau, Devon and Faith McCauley, Daniel Shelton, Vinny and Anthony Garneau.
He is preceded in death by his parents Wilford and Dora Millea Garneau and his father-in-law James Ashley.
After retiring from the Air Force in 1991 he moved to Des Moines, where he and brother Ray ran the Dugout for three years. He then worked for the U.S. Post Office for 10 years. Rick was an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Anthony Knights of Columbus Council 12482, a Fourth Degree Knight of the Dowling Assembly and a member of the American Legion.
He was an avid golfer, fisherman and Red Sox fan, who loved his God, family and friends. We will miss you dearly, Richard.
